About Katu Coffee
I was born where the soil is red, the air is sweet, and coffee trees stretch toward the sun in a small village nestled in Uganda’s Mount Elgon region. Here, coffee isn’t just a crop. It’s a way of life.
Some of my dearest memories are with my grandfather, roasting coffee over an open flame. When the aroma filled the air, neighbors would stop by, asking if they could have just a spoonful. We’d wrap two scoops in a piece of paper, and I’d proudly deliver them a small gift of warmth and connection. That simple act of sharing coffee taught me something powerful: that coffee brings people together.
But behind those warm moments, I saw the quiet struggle. Farmers worked tirelessly, producing some of the best coffee in the world yet rarely saw the reward of their labor. That stayed with me. I made a promise to carry their hopes with me and build something that honored their work.
Our beans come from the rich, high-altitude soils of Bugisu grown by smallholder farmers who still use traditional, organic methods passed down for generations. The result is a cup full of depth and character with notes of dark chocolate, caramel, and citrus.
But more than taste, every bag tells a story: of heritage, of resilience, and of love.

Katu Coffee was founded by Katushabe Birabwa, who grew up surrounded by Uganda’s coffee fields and has spent over 20 years building trusted relationships with farmers.
We are more than a coffee company we are a movement to uplift farming communities, protect traditions, and deliver extraordinary coffee to every table.
